Legal action launched against Musina-Makhado economic initiative
Legal action was taken by civil society organizations against the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone project of the Limpopo provincial government.
By constructing industrial sites on idle land, the plan, according to the Trade Industry Department, aims to spur economic development and provide jobs in the remote north of Limpopo. However, civil society groups claimed that constructing industrial sites in the towns of Makhado and Musina would have a severe effect on the environment. The organizations claimed they had contacted the Polokwane High Court to request a review of the initiative’s authorization.
The idea has come under fire from groups like Living Limpopo and All Rise, which claim it is only a temporary strategy to boost the economy. They asserted that during the course of their existence, the construction of industrial sites in coal-rich areas will produce more than 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions, or more than 10% of South Africa’s allotted yearly carbon budget under the Paris Agreement
